Public Works Foreman – Town of Arcola

The Town of Arcola is a vibrant and growing community located in southeast Saskatchewan. Known for its strong volunteer spirit, welcoming residents, and dedicated Town Council, Arcola takes pride in maintaining a safe, attractive, and well-serviced community. The Town is seeking a motivated, team-oriented, and proactive leader to join our organization as Public Works Foreman (Permanent, Full-Time).

Position Overview

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Public Works Foreman is responsible for overseeing and actively participating in the daily operations of the Town’s public works and utilities. This includes the management, maintenance, and repair of:

  • Water treatment and distribution systems

  • Wastewater collection and disposal

  • Streets, sidewalks, and drainage systems

  • All town-owned buildings/facilities

  • All other municipal infrastructure and assets

This is a working foreman position, requiring both leadership and hands-on operational duties. The successful candidate will serve as the Town’s designated water treatment and distribution operator and play a key role in supporting Council and Administration through effective communication and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strong leadership and supervision to the public works team, fostering a positive, respectful, and safety-focused workplace.

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate daily, seasonal, and long-term maintenance and capital projects.

  • Communicate effectively with the CAO and Town Council, providing regular updates, recommendations, and reports on infrastructure and ongoing projects.

  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety and environmental regulations.

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment and other municipal machinery as required.

  • Respond promptly to emergencies, weather events, and public safety concerns.

  • Proactively identify operational improvements to enhance service delivery and community satisfaction.

 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Grade 12 diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience. Experience in municipal public works is an asset.

  • Class 1 Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, and Wastewater Treatment certifications (or willingness to obtain).

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.

  • Experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment and tools typical of a public works department.

  • Valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver’s License.

  • Current First Aid/CPR and other applicable safety or equipment certifications are considered assets.

Working Conditions

  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

  • Rotating on-call and weekend duties are required.

  • Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies and reside in or near the Town of Arcola.

Summer Student Positions (2)

The Town of Arcola is currently accepting applications for two (2) Summer Student positions for the 2026 season. These positions are ideal for students seeking hands-on outdoor work experience from June through the end of August (flexible based on availability).

Position Overview:
Summer students will work under the direction of the Public Works and Recreation Departments, assisting with a variety of outdoor tasks to support the maintenance and operation of municipal facilities and spaces.

Key Responsibilities:

  • General maintenance of parks, green spaces, and municipal property

  • Grass cutting, trimming, and landscaping duties

  • Assisting with recreation facility upkeep

  • Painting, cleaning, and minor repairs

  • Supporting community events and programs as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions

  • Physically capable of performing manual labour

  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Valid driver’s license is considered an asset

Position Details:

  • Term: June – August 2026 (flexible start/end dates)

  • Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week)

  • Wage: To be determined
